November 20, 2023: In partnership with Titcomb's Bookshop, Sandwich for All's community bookgroup Open Books, Open Minds will be discussing "Night of the Living Rez" by Morgan Talty. “Set in a Native community in Maine, Night of the Living Rez is a riveting debut collection of short stories about what it means to be Penobscot in the twenty-first century and what it means to live, to survive, and to persevere after tragedy.” (Tin House Books) At Titcomb's Bookshop, 6:30-7:30pm.

December 14, 2023: Sandwich for All's second annual Multicultural Holiday Party. All are invited to bring something to share from their family's cultural holiday tradition (food, music, craft, reading, ritual, etc). Children welcome! October 3, 2023: Sandwich for All coordinated and facilitated a preliminary conversation between Wampanoag tribal leaders and Sandwich Public Schools administrators to strengthen the relationship between the tribe and Sandwich schools. Concrete steps were agreed to, including (but not limited to) professional development for Sandwich teachers by representatives of the tribe.

September 7th: ""Antisemitism on the Cape." We hosted a panel discussion with Peggy Shukur, the Anti-Defamation League; School Superintendent Dr. Joe Maruszczcak; Sandwich Middle School teacher and DEIB Team co-lead Colleen Clabault; Barnstable County Human Rights Commission Coordinator Leslie Dominguez-Santos; Barnstable YMCA President Stacie Peugh; Eos Foundation President Andrea Silbert; Sandwich resident and Barnstable County Staff auditor Maxie Davidson.

June 27, 2023: Open Books, Open Minds met to discuss
Zora Neale Hurston's classic and best-loved novel, "Their Eyes Were Watching God." This moving story, named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels since 1923, explores protagonist Janie Crawford's "ripening from a vibrant, but voiceless, teenage girl into a woman with her finger on the trigger of her own destiny". May 16, 2023: Open Books, Open Minds book group met to discuss "The Mashpee Nine: A Story of Cultural Justice" by Paula Peters, local author, journalist, and activist Paula Peters, a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. The book recounts details of a police raid, arrest and court trial of nine Wampanoag tribal members who were drumming on the Mashpee Pond campsite in July 1976. Sandwich Public Library, 6:30-8:00pm.

April 26, 2023: Sandwich for All hosted a free community screening of the Indieflix film, "Race to be Human," with dialogue facilitated by SMHS World of Difference peer mentors afterward. This film addresses the apprehension and confusion many feel when talking about race and racism, and its impact on mental health-- all through the eyes of students, teachers, and experts. April 25, 2023: Open Books, Open Minds book group met to discuss April's selection, "Olga Dies Dreaming," by Xochitl Gonzalez, “...the tale of a status-driven wedding planner grappling with her social ambitions, absent mother, and Puerto Rican roots - all in the wake of Hurricane Maria." April 13, 2023: LGBTQIA+ Allyship Workshop: After a quick review from Tracy Morin's March 9 presentation, we broke into small groups to share, listen, and brainstorm concrete ways to put “allyship” into action and make positive changes for LGBTQIA+ youth in our community. March 28, 2023: Open Books, Open Minds Book Group met to discuss March's selection, "Out Of My Mind" by Sharon M. Draper. Draper's NY Times best-selling story tells the compelling story of Melody, an 11-year old girl with cerebral palsy. Kirkus Reviews called it "gutsy and unflinching." Sandwich Public Library, MacKnight Room, 6:30-8:00pm.

March 9, 2023: LQBTQIA+ Allyship, Our Youth, and Our Town. Sandwich for All hosted a presentation and workshop with Tracy Morin, covering concepts of gender and sexuality and how they evolve over time; troubling trends in the mental health of youth who identify as LGBTQIA+; and a look at Sandwich, including brainstorming ways to make our town a safer, more inclusive place for our LGBTQIA+ youth, neighbors, and visitors. February 2, 2023: "Disability Etiquette." Sometimes even our best intentions can be hurtful. Sandwich for All hosted this presentation by Lisa Drennan of MERGE Diverse Abilities Inclusion Consulting in which we learned some of the best and worst practices for being present for those with diverse abilities. At the Sandwich Public Library, from 7:00 till 8:00 pm, and streamed on Facebook Live. |
